American Cancer Society grant funds liver cancer research

To better understand the causes of liver cancer, Zhaowen Zhu, M.D., Ph.D., University of Iowa assistant research scientist in internal medicine, is leading a study funded by a $30,000 American Cancer Society seed grant through Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI.

Hepatitis C affects approximately four million Americans and causes liver cirrhosis. In some patients with this type of cirrhosis, liver cancer may develop, but how this happens is not clear.

Telomerase is an enzyme that promotes the longevity of most cells, including liver cells, and has been associated with the development of cancer. Zhu's team will study whether and how three hepatitis C proteins increase the activity of telomerase as a possible explanation for how hepatitis C causes cancer.

UI Swing Dance Club hosts Valentine's Day dance Feb. 14

Looking for a fun way to spend Valentine's Day? Consider swinging the night away with the University of Iowa Swing Dance Club. Students and Iowa City residents alike are invited to join in a night of swing dancing and live jazz music.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 14 with an hour-long beginner's lesson taught by members of the UI Swing Dance Club. No partner or previous dance experience is necessary. From 8 to 11 p.m., all dancers can hit the floor to the sounds of the Soul Searchers.

Kate Jochum, president of the UI Swing Dance Club, says the dance will offer great company, entertaining music and a unique evening experience for everyone.

The dance will be held at Old Brick Church, 26 E. Market St. in Iowa City. Admission is $5 for club members and $10 for the general public.

The UI Swing Dance Club is a student organization that offers classes, workshops and social dances to its members and the Iowa City community.
