UI WISE program awards travel grants

The University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program has announced fall semester award recipients of its Dr. Eunice Schuytema Beam Travel Grant Program.

The award winners, each of whom will receive $300 toward travel to a professional meeting to present scholarly work, are:

IOWA

Iowa City: Rania Hamed, a pharmaceutics doctoral student in the college of pharmacy, delivered an oral presentation, "Development of a More Physiologically-Relevant Mucus Mimetic of the Upper Respiratory Tract," at the American institute of Chemical Engineers 2009 Annual Meeting. The presentation was given Nov. 9 in Nashville, Tenn.

Sioux City: Jennifer Streeter, an anatomy and cell biology doctoral student in the college of medicine delivered a presentation, "Potential Role of Protein Kinase C-_1 as a Novel Regulator of NOX1 Activation." The presentation was given Nov. 19 in San Francisco at the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine 16th Annual Conference. Jennifer also received the Young Investigator Award (YIA). YIAs are presented to students and postdoctoral fellows based on the submitted abstract and the presentation of the work at the annual meeting. Candidates must be first authors on a submitted abstract. As a YIA awardee, Jennifer received a $500 stipend in recognition of her work as well as free meeting registration for a future annual meeting.

WISCONSIN

Fontana: Lauren Zubow, a speech-language pathology doctoral student in the Graduate College, will deliver an oral presentation at the Assistive Technology Industry Association conference Jan. 27-30 in Orlando, Fla. Her presentation is titled "Developing Eye-Gaze: A Look at Treatment Progression."

CHINA

Shanghai: Jing Wang, a computer science doctoral student in the college of liberal arts & sciences, delivered an oral presentation at the INFORMS Annual Meeting 2009 Oct. 11-14 in San Diego. Her presentation was titled "Estimating Missing Attribute Values Using Ordered Attribute Trees."
