UI undergraduate students to present research at April 25 celebration

More than 100 University of Iowa undergraduate students will present their research at the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU) Fifth Annual Spring Undergraduate Research Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25 in the Blank Honors Center Atrium. The event is free and open to the public.

UI Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the University College, M. Beth Ingram, will give opening remarks and UI Interim Vice President for Research Jordan Cohen will present the Vice President for Research's 2009 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Awards at noon.

Students presenting research in the arts, humanities and social sciences will present from 11 a.m. to noon. Students in mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences will present their research from 1 to 2 p.m.

Many students presenting at the festival received recognition as an ICRU Research Fellow to pursue a specific research question and received $2,500 for the 2008-09 academic year.

"These awards represent a wonderful opportunity for outstanding students to use their creativity to gain hands-on experience while exploring career directions," said Bob Kirby, ICRU director.

Students working in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Carver College of Medicine, the College of Engineering, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Education, Tippie College of Business, the College of Nursing and the College of Public Health will present their research at the festival.

Raaii's poster is entitled "Conjuring Abraham, Martin, and John:  Memory, Myth and News of the Obama Presidential Campaign." Raaii is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ahmad Raaii.

Bellevue: Rachel Bender is a global health major working with mentor Kristi Ferguson in the family medicine department. Bender's poster is entitled "Researching and Addressing Health Challenges in the Local Latino Community." Bender is the daughter of Randy and Marta Bender.

Burlington: Tim Mansheim is an electrical engineering major working with mentor Anton Kruger in the electrical and computer engineering department. Mansheim's poster is entitled "A Robust, Microwave Rain Gauge." Mansheim is the son of Gary and Ruth Mansheim.

Cedar Falls: Kevin Flaherty is an anthropology major working with mentor Matthew Hill in the anthropology department. Flaherty's poster is entitled "Long-term Changes in Prehistoric Hunting on the Great Plains (8000-500 years ago): Trends in Diet Breadth and Human Impacts to Wildlife Populations." Flaherty is the son of Diane and Dan Flaherty.

Cincinnati: Barbara Nzegwu is a biomedical engineering major working with mentor Sarah England in the molecular physiology and biophysics department. Nzegwu's poster is entitled "Identification of Possible Estrogen Binding Sites on the Maxi-K Channel." Nzegwu is the daughter of Obiora and Blessing Nzegwu.

WISCONSIN:

Chilton: Kelly Salm is a microbiology major working with mentor Joseph Zabner in the internal medicine department. Salm's poster is entitled "Low Glucose Concentration in the Airway Surface Liquid is Important to Maintain a Sterile Airway Surface." Salm is the daughter of Mark and Jean Salm.

Eau Claire: Maria Drout is a physics and astronomy major working with mentor Cornelia Lang in the physics and astronomy department. Drout's poster is entitled "The Magnetized Interstellar Medium and Massive Star Formation in the Galactic Center." Drout is the daughter of Robin and Becky Drout.

Seo-Gu: Na Yeon Kang is a chemical and biochemical engineering major working with mentor Julie Jessop in the chemical and biochemical engineering department. Kang's poster is entitled "Epoxide/Acrylate Hybrid Photopolymerizations: Synergy of the Dual Photoinitiator System." Kang is the daughter of Seok Keun Kang.

Seoul: Janice Kim is a psychology major working with mentor Inah Lee in the psychology department. Kim's poster is entitled "The Role of the Perirhinal Cortex in Object-Place Paired Association." Kim is the daughter of Young Ki Kim and Kyung Hye Kim.
