UI Department of Dance presents thesis concert April 16-18

The University of Iowa Department of Dance will present "The 3 Temperaments," a thesis concert by Joanna Rosenthal, Analia Alegre-Femenias and Santo Scavuzzo III at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 16-18, in the Space Place Theatre of UI North Hall.

The program will open with Rosenthal's "Grey Noise," inspired by Film Noir of the 1940s and '50s, and focusing on human relationships, the need for self-preservation, and the affect of violence and aggression. With intense physicality and emotion, "Grey Noise" depicts an environment whose inhabitants are on edge, unpredictable and hard to control. Rosenthal uses a sound collage featuring Morphine, Jori Hulkkonen, Ben Frost and Roy Webb; costume design by graduate student Ellen Alphonso; and lighting design by Adam P. Boyer.

Alegre-Femenias submerges her craft as a choreographer in the painting and drawing techniques and Pablo Picasso. In doing so she creates three works inspired by women and privacy; predatory tendencies between males; and the virility and sensuality in the image of the bull. Her research has brought her to look at movement from a basic understanding of lines, curves and intensity.

Scavuzzo explores three vastly different worlds of performance with the solo, "If Only", choreographed by Illinois State University's assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts, Laurie Merriman; "Les Jeux des Hommes," a male duet choreographed by fellow Alegre-Femenias; and "Being Santo DiSanti," a group work choreographed by UI adjunct faculty member Annett Schaidlich-Hendrix.

The Department of Dance and the School of Music are units in the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Admission will be $12; UI students and youth $6.
