Scibona will read from debut novel for 'Live from Prairie Lights' Sept. 25

Salvatore Scibona, an alumnus of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, will read from his debut novel, "The End," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen live via the University of Iowa Writing University Web site http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

The event will be recorded for broadcast on Iowa Public Radio's "Live from Prairie Lights" series. Hour-long "Live from Prairie Lights" productions, hosted by WSUI's Julie Englander, air at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 7 p.m. Sundays on WSUI-AM 910 in Iowa City and WOI-AM 640 in Ames.

Set on a single day in 1953 but echoing decades of personal histories, "The End" poetically details the experiences of six people -- all residents of an Italian enclave -- in an Ohio carnival crowd.

Annie Dillard called the book, "A masterful novel set amid 1950s America. Full of wisdom, consequence, and grace, Salvatore Scibona's radiant debut brims with the promise of a remarkable literary career, of which 'The End' is only the beginning."

Scibona's fiction has been published in The Threepenny Review, Best New American Voices 2004, and The Pushcart Book of Short Stories: The Best Stories from a Quarter-Century of the Pushcart Prize. He is the writing coordinator at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Mass.
