IWP participants will introduce films in free Cinematheque series

Writers in residence at the University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) will introduce films from around the world in the IWP Cinematheque series, and lead a conversation after each screening. The free screenings will take place at 8 p.m. Sundays September to November in Room 101 of the Becker Communication Studies Building.

--Sept 14: Niq Mhlongo from South Africa will present "Tsotsi," a 2005 film directed by Gavin Hood and the winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

--Sept. 21: Veronica Raimo from Italy will present the 1965 Locarno International Film Festival Silver Sail award-winner "Fists in the Pockets," directed by Marco Belocchio.

-- Sept. 28: Nikola Madzirov from Macedonia will present the Oscar-nominated "Shadows," a joint Macedonian/German film from 2007, directed by Milcho Manchevski.

--Oct. 5: Teng Mangansakan from the Philippines will present his documentary "Dispatches from Mindanao."

-- Oct. 12: Laila Al Atrash from Jordan will introduce "Dreams of Hind and Camilia" a 1988 Egyptian film depicting the hopelessness of Cairo's poor, directed by Mohammed Khan.

--Oct. 19: Leonardo Henriquez from Venezuela will present his Academy Award-nominated  "Sangrador," based on Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

-- Oct. 26: Uche Umezurike from Nigeria will introduce the "Nollywood" feature "The Widow," directed by his countrymen Kingsley Ogoro and Aquila Njamah in 2005.

--Nov. 2: Argentina's Carlos Gamerro will present Martin Tejada's 2007 film, "Tres de corazón," for which he wrote the screenplay.
