Sugg named the Holden Associate Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery

Sonia L. Sugg, M.D., associate professor of surgery in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been named the Holden Associate Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery. The three-year appointment was effective July 1.

The Holden Associate Professorship of Breast Cancer Surgery was established through an anonymous gift to the UI Foundation in 2005 to support the academic pursuits of a faculty member in surgery who has a distinguished research program in breast cancer surgery.

"Dr. Sugg is an accomplished surgeon and breast cancer researcher," said Ronald Weigel, M.D., Ph.D., professor and head of surgery. "Her appointment as the Holden Associate Professor of Breast Cancer Surgery is well-deserved recognition of the excellent care she provides her patients and of her work to advance understanding of the genetic basis of breast cancer risk -- the kind of translational science that will further improve care for future breast cancer patients."

Sugg joined the UI Department of Surgery in 2007 and is a member of the Breast Cancer Care Program at UI Hospitals and Clinics. She also is a member of the Cancer Genetics and Computational Biology Program in Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI.

Sugg received a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and a medical degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. She completed a residency in general surgery at University of Michigan Medical Center, a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and a fellowship in endocrine surgery at the University of Toronto, Canada.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information, visit the UI Foundation's Web site at http://www.uiowafoundation.org.
