UI Press releases poetry by John Isles in Kuhl House Series

"Inverse Sky" by John Isles, part of the Kuhl House Poets series, will be available Sept. 15, 2008, from the University of Iowa Press.

Kevin Prufer, editor of the literary journal Pleiades, commented: "What first draws me to the poems in 'Inverse Sky' are John Isles' musical gifts. These poems are sonically subtle and complex, composed with virtuosic technical skill.

"But there's much more going on here than beautiful language, for these energetic poems, inhabiting the history and landscape of California, are as deeply considered as they are heard. Whether Isles is observing the roller rinks and motel pools of modern-day California or the burning missions of its past, he brings to 'Inverse Sky' a mind keenly attuned to a problematic history, to our personal and public responsibilities.

"I've long considered John Isles one of the most exciting of the emerging generation of American poets; these poems bear that out."

Isles is the author of "Ark," also from the UI Press, and coeditor of the Baltics section of New European Poets. He received an award from the Los Angeles Review in 2004 and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2005.

His poems have appeared in journals including American Letters & Commentary, the Boston Review, the Denver Quarterly and Pleiades.

"Inverse Sky " will be available at bookstores or directly from the UI Press by phone at 800-621-2736 or online at http://www.uiowapress.org. Customers in the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East or Africa may order from the Eurospan Group online at http://www.eurospangroup.com/bookstore.
