Hokanson and Kratz visit America's county fairs in Nov. 7 Prairie Lights reading

Former University of Iowa staff/faculty members Drake Hokanson and Carol Kratz, who are both photographers and writers, will return to Iowa City to read from "Purebread and Homegrown: America's County Fairs," which they co-authored, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen live via the University of Iowa Writing University  Web site http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

The event will be recorded for broadcast on Iowa Public Radio's "Live from Prairie Lights" series. Hour-long "Live from Prairie Lights" productions, hosted by WSUI's Julie Englander, air at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 7 p.m. Sundays on WSUI-AM 910 in Iowa City and WOI-AM 640 in Ames.

Jane Stern and Michael Stern, authors of "Two for the Road: Our Love Affair with American Food," wrote, "Just like a great county fair, this book is vast and overpowering. . . . To read 'Purebred and Homegrown: America's County Fairs' is to smell hot corn dogs and barbecue and to hear the happy screams of kids on roller coasters and the moo of fat oxen in harness."

Kratz is a physician assistant at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis. Hokanson is the author of the popular book "Lincoln Highway: Main Street across America," as well as "Reflecting a Prairie Town: A Year in Peterson." His photographs and writing have been featured in several other books and periodicals. He is the director of the Center for Mississippi River Studies at Winona State University in Minnesota. They are co-editors of "America from the Air: An Aviator's Story."
