MEDIA ADVISORY: Principal to announce pledge Oct. 23

WHAT: A presentation announcing a $319,000 pledge from the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. will be made following a breakfast hosted by students with cognitive and learning disabilities, individuals who make up an untapped resource in tomorrow's workforce. Students from the University of Iowa College of Education's Realizing Education and Career Hopes (REACH) will welcome REACH Advisory Board members and be available to speak with members of the media. The gift is being made through the UI Foundation.

WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 23, with the breakfast and student availability from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. and remarks from UI officials, REACH advisory board members and Principal Financial Group representatives beginning at 9 a.m.

WHY: To meet students in REACH who will benefit from the financial commitment of the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. Funds will support a career development coordinator position. This staff member will spearhead the preparation and transition of REACH students to new career opportunities with Iowa businesses, such as the Principal Financial Group, and develop partnerships with an array of employers to better meet the workforce needs of the 21st century. While participating in the two-year certificate program, REACH students will develop their work and work related skills, including using technology to be able to work in jobs that previously may have been inaccessible to them.

WHO: Attendees making remarks will include Jim Crawford, Principal Financial Group Government Relations director and REACH Advisory Board member; former Iowa Lt. Gov. and REACH Advisory Board Chair Sally Pederson; UI Executive Vice President and Provost Wallace Loh; UI Foundation President Lynette Marshall; College of Education Dean Sandra Damico; and UI REACH Interim Director Jo Hendrickson.
