Braun named chief of staff for UI President's Office

University of Iowa President Sally Mason today announced the appointment of Mark Braun as the chief of staff for the President's Office.

"As I have studied the office and the most recent review conducted of the President's Office, it was apparent to me that a chief of staff is needed," Mason said. "A chief of staff will improve the functioning and supervision of the President's Office staff as well as enhance our ability to focus on moving the university forward.

"I'm pleased that Mark Braun has agreed to take on these new duties," she added. "He will be a valuable addition to my team of senior administrators. He is well respected in state government, both in the legislature and the Governor's Office. That respect will contribute to confidence in our decisions on key policy and statewide issues."

Braun, a Muscatine native, has more than 16 years experience with the university, the Board of Regents Office, the State Legislature, the Governor's Office and congressional offices.

He was hired by President Mary Sue Coleman to be the UI's lobbyist in 1998.  He served in this role for six years before the Board of Regents reorganized the lobbying function into the Board Office.  Before coming to work for the university, he was a staff member for the Iowa State Senate and a staff member for a member of Congress after graduating from the UI.

During his 10-year tenure as the UI Lobbyist, Braun has successfully advocated for state support of full funding of the salary needs at the university, additional funding for those Iowans treated at the UI under the IowaCare program, as well as many capital projects on campus, such as a new Hygienic Laboratory, the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Discovery, renovation of the Chemistry building and many others.
