Nov. 13, 2008 UI President Mason issues statement on Weiger death University of Iowa President Sally Mason issued the following statement of the campus community Thursday: Dear Students, Faculty and Staff: Last evening we were informed by local news media of the death of UI School of Music Professor Mark Weiger. Professor Weiger came to the University of Iowa in 1988 to teach oboe and chamber music. He received his degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School and was a very accomplished musician. We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mark Weiger. This is a difficult time for our community, and it is essential that we reach out to our students and colleagues in the School of Music to offer our sympathy and whatever other assistance they may need. We urge any UI community member having personal difficulties to seek counseling and assistance either through counseling resources for faculty, staff and students, or through other avenues. Likewise, those who are seeking help in dealing with this sad news should know they can use those services as well. Students may contact University Counseling Services at 335-7294. Faculty and staff may contact Faculty and Staff Services at 335-2085. I urge the University community to refrain from speculation about this event, but to support all who need assistance.
