Student exit poll examines views on financial crisis, drinking, candidates

University of Iowa political campaigning classes conducted exit polls with more than 1,100 Johnson County residents in 15 precincts on Election Day. Results of the poll, supervised by UI political scientist David Redlawsk, show that voters believe the economy is the No. 1 issue that needs to be addressed locally. Since the 2006 exit poll, support for raising Iowa City's bar access age to 21 decreased. The community -- and especially students themselves -- agreed that students are most responsible for addressing binge drinking. The poll also examined which candidates people voted for and why in the presidential, U.S. House and U.S. Senate races.
