'Reflections' book depicts the UI campus through the seasons

The University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) has published a book titled "Reflections: A Seasonal Journey Through the Campus," featuring 160 photos by Richard Sjolund, showcasing the UI through the seasons.

"Reflections" is an over-sized coffee-table book that portrays the proud history, athletics, distinguished academics, and diverse UI student body through a variety of images, including the Hawkeye gameday experience, campus life, and architectural shots.

Sjolund began photography for the book in summer 2007 and was to be completed by spring 2008. After the Iowa River flooding in June, a special chapter was included to commemorate the university's response to the disaster.

Sjolund, professor emeritus of biological sciences at the UI, had been intrigued by photography since he was a boy, and it played an important role in his research at the university. As a professor, he taught digital photography at the university until his retirement in 2000, when he opened a professional photography studio.

Other contributions include a foreword written by former Iowa Poet Laureate and Iowa Writers' Workshop professor emeritus Marvin Bell. Tom Schnell, associate professor of industrial engineering, piloted his plane for the aerial shots of the campus.

The price of the book is $39.95; limited quantities of a special collector's edition are available for $79.95. Proceeds support UIAA programs. To order visit or call 888-747-7865 ext 302. For more information call the UI Alumni Association 800-469-2586.
