UI to confer degrees in spring commencement exercises

The University of Iowa will confer degrees on approximately 4,800 graduates during commencement ceremonies that begin Thursday, May 15, when UI President Sally Mason will award degrees to graduates of the UI College of Pharmacy at Hancher Auditorium.

On Friday, May 16, Mason will confer degrees on graduates of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and UI Interim Provost Lola Lopes will confer degrees on graduates of the Henry B. Tippie School of Management (M.B.A. program). Both commencements are at Hancher, as well.

Mason will also confer degrees at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences commencement in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, May 17. Robert Solow, who is a Nobel Prize recipient in economics, will be conferred with an honorary degree at the CLAS commencement ceremonies. He is currently the Robert K. Merton Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation. Since 1984, Solow has served on the UI Tippie College of Business Board of Visitors, and he has also taught in the college's M.B.A. program.

Doors at both commencement venues, Hancher and Carver-Hawkeye, open an hour before the ceremonies.

The complete commencement schedule is listed below.

Thursday, May 15:

--College of Pharmacy: 10 a.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 99. Degrees will be conferred by Mason.

Friday, May 16:

--Tippie School of Management (M.B.A. program): 10 a.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 168. Degrees will be conferred by Lopes.  Speaker will be Eric Hansotia, general manager of Deere Harvester in East Moline and 1998 Executive M.B.A. alumnus.

--UI Carver College of Medicine: 7:30 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 179. Degrees will be conferred by Mason.

Saturday, May 17:

--College of Liberal Arts and Sciences: 9 a.m., Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Number of degrees to be conferred: 2,175. Degrees will be conferred by Mason.

--Henry B. Tippie College of Business: 9 a.m. Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 712. Degrees to be conferred by Lopes. Speaker will be Jack Evans, Board of Regents, State of Iowa member.

--College of Law: 1 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 188. Degrees to be conferred by Associate Provost Marcella David.  Speaker will be Bruce Braley, U.S. Representative and 1983 law school alumnus.

--Graduate College: 3 p.m. (pre-processional begins at 2:55 p.m.), Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Number of degrees to be conferred: 835. Degrees to be conferred by Mason.

--College of Nursing: 5 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 221. Degrees to be conferred by Lopes.

Sunday, May 18:

--College of Engineering: 1 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 167. Degrees to be conferred by Mason.

Friday, June 6:

--College of Dentistry: 3 p.m., Hancher Auditorium. Number of degrees to be conferred: 67. Degrees to be conferred by Lopes.

Commencement ceremonies of the following colleges are open to the public: Law; Pharmacy; Henry B. Tippie School of Management; Carver College of Medicine; Liberal Arts and Sciences; Nursing; Dentistry and Engineering. For the Henry B. Tippie College of Business commencement, guests must obtain tickets from a graduating student.

All commencement ceremonies except for the Henry B. Tippie College of Business will be broadcast live on UITV. All commencement events will be streamed live over the Internet at UITV's Web site mms://winmedia.uiowa.edu/events except the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing, which will be at mms://winmedia.uiowa.edu/live. [NOTE: The streaming video links will not work until 60 minutes prior to the events.]
