Fajardo receives award from Association of University Radiologists

Laurie Fajardo, M.D., professor and head of radiology in the University of Iowa's Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, received the Gold Medal Award from the Association of University Radiologists (AUR) at its annual meeting March 25-29 in Seattle.

The AUR Gold Medal Award is presented in recognition of unusually distinguished service or contributions to AUR, academic radiology, or the field of radiology in general. The award was established in 1978 and has been given to around 60 individuals. Fajardo is only the fifth female recipient. The only other UI recipient was Edmund A. Franken Jr., M.D., professor emeritus of radiology, who received it in 2001.

Intellectual property attorney to speak on fantasy baseball case April 2

Rudy Telscher, an attorney who is defending a fantasy baseball league organizer against an intellectual property law claim by Major League Baseball over the use of player names and statistics, will discuss the lawsuit at the University of Iowa College of Law at noon Wednesday, April 2 in Room 245 of the Boyd Law Building. The discussion is sponsored by the law school's Innovation, Business and Law Program.

In the lawsuit, MLB claims that Telscher's client, CBC Distribution and Marketing, must pay a licensing fee for the use of player identities and statistics in its fantasy game. Trial and appellate courts ruled against MLB, saying, among other things, that First Amendment free speech protections take precedence over any "right of publicity" interest that MLB might have in the identities and statistics. MLB has recently asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case.
