Belin-Blank Center names meritorious inventors at state convention
The University of Iowa College of Education's Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development recently announced the names of the meritorious inventors for the innovations they displayed at the 2008 Invent Iowa State Convention. The convention was held at the UI Carver-Hawkeye Arena in April.
Invent Iowa is a comprehensive, statewide program developed to assist Iowa's educators in promoting the invention process as part of their regular K-12 curriculum. Since 1987, Iowa students have had the opportunity to express their inventiveness and solve problems in an educational way.
This year, 68 meritorious inventors received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. Additionally, six student inventors were awarded $500 scholarships to the UI College of Engineering and Iowa State University College of Engineering that can be applied if the student ultimately attends either college.
Approximately 30,000 students in grades three through 10 representing 145 towns throughout Iowa annually participate in local and regional invention competitions in order to qualify for the state invention convention. which is sponsored by the UI and ISU engineering colleges and held at each school's campus on alternating years.
"Invent Iowa is the type of program in which students find their own problems to solve," said Clar Baldus, Invent Iowa State Convention coordinator and administrator for the Inventiveness in the Belin-Blank Center. "There's a lot of perseverance with these students; they keep working to improve their inventions every step of the way."
A total of 358 students presented 266 inventions this year to demonstrate solutions they feel will make life easier or more enjoyable for many people. Inventions included recreational types of products, farming tools, and safety devices.
"These young inventors are very altruistic in many ways," Baldus said. "It just amazes you. The students invent everything from entertainment gadgets, to tools that make life easier for a specific group to medical and farm safety devices."
