Field named interim head of UI Department of Internal Medicine
F. Jeffrey Field, M.D., has been named interim head of the Department of Internal Medicine in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, effective immediately.
Field fills the position vacated by Paul Rothman, M.D., who was named dean of the Carver College of Medicine May 30 and whose appointment was formally approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa at its meeting June 12 in Ames.
"I am extremely pleased that Jeff has enthusiastically accepted these important new responsibilities and agreed to guide the department during the search for a new, permanent head," Rothman said. "He is an outstanding physician, an excellent administrator and a trusted colleague, so I am confident he will do a great job leading the department during this transition."
The search for a permanent head of internal medicine will begin in the coming weeks.
A UI faculty member since 1980, Field is a professor in the department's gastroenterology-hepatology division, with clinical expertise in the areas of inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, diarrhea, colon polyp surveillance and gastroesophageal reflux disease. His research interests focus on the intestinal regulation of cholesterol metabolism.
On an administrative level, Field has served as associate chair for educational programs in the Department of Internal Medicine, and he currently serves as the department's associate chair for promotions. Field served as interim director of the gastroenterology-hepatology division in 2005-06.
Field earned a medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1974. He completed a medical residency at Wisconsin, and he received fellowship training at Stanford University Medical Center.
