Local student attends UI College of Engineering RoboCamp

(Student name) of (name of city) recently attended a one-week, University of Iowa College of Engineering RoboCamp program for high school students held at Iowa City West High School.

Students were taught basic robotic skills that will enable them to better compete in the annual For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) robot competition, according to program advisor Geb Thomas, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering and robotics expert in the University of Iowa College of Engineering.

Student activities included building circuits, cutting parts with a mill and drill press, and constructing and programming Lego MindStorm Robots and solar-powered bug-robots. The camp concluded with a robot talent show. Proceeds from the camp will be used to support the UI's RoboCup team, which is scheduled to travel to Switzerland next year to compete in the annual RoboCup competition.

UI engineering students assisting with the program included: Kris Thornburgh of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, an industrial engineering doctoral student; Garrett Jensen of Independence, Iowa, an industrial engineering undergraduate student; Brian Johns of Cedar Rapids, a mechanical engineering graduate student; Gray Thomas of Iowa City, high school lab assistant for Geb Thomas; Maxwell Bryk of Iowa City, high school lab assistant for Geb Thomas.

FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor and entrepreneur, as a not-for-profit public charity that designs programs to motivate young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.

IOWA CITY: Kabir Abiose, Jameson Betts, Leiden Cervantes, Joshua Fajardo-Frink, Marcus Johnson, Masha Kulikova, Charles Ni, Eric Streed, Jesse Thomas.

LONE TREE: Rebecca Martin.
