He has more than 30 years of experience in academic health care, including numerous positions at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., and the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, most recently as their executive vice president and chief operating officer. Kates will begin working at UI Hospitals and Clinics on Sept. 15. His daughter, one of his two children, attends the UI. He will receive an annual salary of $540,000. "I feel very fortunate to be coming to such a great hospital and a tremendous community," Kates said. "My family saw firsthand the skill and compassion of the staff here when my daughter had to visit the Emergency Treatment Center. As an observer, I witnessed how Iowans pulled together during the flooding. I'm extremely honored to be selected to lead one of the finest teaching hospitals in the nation."
