Financial Times names Tippie accounting program among top 10 in world
A survey by the Financial Times has ranked the graduate accounting program in the University of Iowa's Tippie School of Management among the world's top 10.
The London-based daily business newspaper ranked the Tippie graduate accounting program at number 8 in survey results released in its Jan. 28 issue.
"This is a strong testament to the quality of our faculty, the overall strength of our programs and the caliber of our students and alumni," said Lynn Pringle, clinical assistant professor of accounting and director of the Master's in Accountancy Program.
Pringle said the high ranking is impressive given the challenges faced by the accounting profession and accounting education in recent years. The accounting scandals at Enron and other corporations and the subsequent passage of the Sarbanes Oxley Act by Congress in 2002 have significantly changed much of how accountants work, and how new accountants are educated.
"Iowa's program has been able to meet these educational challenges and continue to graduate world-class accountants with the help of our advisory council, which is made up of accounting alumni from around the country," Pringle said.
The Financial Times ranking was compiled by combining scores given to the career development of the alumni of each school as measured by salary increases, as well as the research output of the faculty, as measured by publications in scholarly journals. Pringle said the Tippie graduate accounting program scored high in both.
"Our faculty are committed to both outstanding scholarship, and to making that scholarship relevant in our students' careers," he said.
The newspaper ranked the Tippie School of Management's overall MBA program at number 25 in the United States, 55 in the world.
The Financial Times rankings are based on responses to questionnaires sent electronically to alumni who graduated in 2004. The survey ranked colleges in three areas; alumni salaries and career development; the diversity and international reach of the business school and its MBA program; and the research capabilities of each school.
