Human rights essay contest open to UI, ISU and UNI students, Feb. 1 deadline

The UI Center for Human Rights is broadening its Burns H. Weston Essay Prize Competition to include all undergraduate, graduate and professional students of the UI, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. The essay competition recognizes outstanding student scholarship on international human rights issues and promotes understanding and the continuing advancement of human rights in Iowa and abroad. The competition awards $750 to an outstanding undergraduate student and $1,000 to an outstanding graduate or professional student. The deadline for submission is Feb. 1, 2008. Ellis to perform on 'Java Blend' Feb. 8

Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Ellis will perform live as part of the Iowa Public Radio performance series Java Blend from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Java House in downtown Iowa City. The hour-long, free show originates from WSUI-AM 910 will be recorded for broadcast Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 across the state on Iowa Public Radio. Community seminar Feb. 13 to focus on arrhythmias

UI Health Care cardiologist James Martins, M.D., will present a free community seminar, "What Is A 'Normal' Heart Rhythm?" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, located at 1220 First Ave. in Coralville. Martins will discuss the signs and symptoms of arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms) as well as new advances in detecting and treating the condition.
