Kumar receives CHEEC seed grant for air quality study

Naresh Kumar, assistant professor in the UI Department of Geography, was awarded $30,000 through the UI Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) Seed Grant Program for 2008.

Kumar's project focuses on indoor and outdoor air quality in and around the Iowa City area. Thirty-three households will be recruited in the study for monitoring indoor and outdoor air pollution with a set of four different samplers and household characteristics. Using these data, Kumar will examine the relationship of indoor air quality with cooking and heating fuel, flooring type, number of occupants, exchange of air between indoor and outdoor environments, satellite-based estimates of ambient air pollution, and meteorological conditions. This relationship in turn will have the potential to attribute indoor air quality by indirect measures and assess personal exposure and its linkages with short- and long-term health effects.

The CHEEC seed grant program supports research across a range of innovative environmental health research topics. Results of these pilot-scale studies support investigators' efforts to acquire additional federal or private grant funding.
