UI Museum of Art hosts 'View and DO" family event Feb. 2
The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) will host "View and DO: A Family Art Activity," part of its ongoing series of family-centered events, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2.
"View and DO" programs, designed for child-adult teams, use current UIMA exhibitions as a jumping off point for reflection about composition and form, art history movements and approaches to art. Each session starts with an introduction to a selection of artworks in the UIMA. Afterwards, participants will do a hands-on arts activity for kids and adults based on the artworks viewed.
The Feb. 2 program will be presented in conjunction with the current exhibition "VOOM PORTRAITS Robert Wilson." Participants will investigate storytelling, portraiture and new media, and then create their own masterpieces using puppetry and shadowbox theater techniques.
"View and DO" is an activity that all members of the family can get into. "The emphasis is on the do," Dale Fisher, the museum's director of education, said. "Younger kids are really eager to create, and the parents do fine once the kids teach them how to play."
The activity is especially geared towards children ages 6 to 10 and their parents and grandparents or adult caregivers. "View and DO" is open to the public and costs $10 for each child-and-adult team. For registration information, call 319-335-3232.
"View and DO!" sessions are held monthly on Saturdays through the academic year. On March 1, participants will get to try their hand at weaving techniques including knotting and strip weaving, using works in the museum's African collection as examples.
The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
