Caplan named head of UI Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry

Dan Caplan, D.D.S., Ph.D., has been named head of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry.

Caplan, whose appointment was effective Dec. 31, succeeds Raymond Kuthy, D.D.S., who served as head of the department from 1999-2006. Jed Hand, D.D.S., professor and executive associate dean in the college, had served as interim department head since 2006.

Caplan comes to the UI from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, where he was an associate professor in the Department of Dental Ecology. He also served as director of the school's oral epidemiology program, and he participated in the school's pre-doctoral clinic and didactic curriculum, maintained a faculty clinical practice, and served as a reviewer for oral health projects submitted to the UNC School of Medicine's General Clinical Research Center.

His research interests include outcomes related to endodontic treatment, decision making in endodontics, the relationships between oral and systemic diseases, and evaluation of diagnostic tests.

"We are delighted to have Dr. Caplan return to Iowa City in this key leadership role," said David Johnsen, D.D.S., dean of the UI College of Dentistry. "His clinical expertise, academic accomplishments, and his teaching and administrative experience make Dan an excellent choice to lead our Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. I look forward to working with him."

A 1988 graduate of the UI College of Dentistry, Caplan received a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 1982. Following dental school, he completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis in 1989. He received a doctorate at the University of North Carolina in 1995 and joined the UNC faculty the same year.
