John Irving returns to UI Writers' Workshop for March 12 reading

University of Iowa Distinguished Alumnus John Irving, a graduate and former faculty member of the Writers' Workshop, will return to the UI to present a free reading at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in Lecture Room 1 of UI Van Allen Hall.

Irving, who received the UI Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005, is an author whose works are both bestselling and critically respected, and he is also an Academy Award-winning screenwriter for the adaptation of his novel "The Cider House Rules."

He came to wide attention in the late 1970s with "The World According to Garp," and his other works include "A Prayer for Owen Meany," "The Hotel New Hampshire," "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed," "A Son of the Circus," "A Widow for One Year," "The Fourth Hand," "A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound" and, most recently, "Until I Find You."

He is one in the handful of authors whose name is always more prominent on his book covers than the titles of his novels.

He has received support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and he has won a National Book Award and an O. Henry Award. He a member of both the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The Writers' Workshop is a graduate program in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
