Thomas Franks reads from 'The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule,' Sept. 14

Thomas Franks, the author of "What's the Matter with Kansas" and "One Market Under God," will read from his new book, "The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule," at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen live via the University of Iowa Writing University Web site http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

The event will be recorded for broadcast on Iowa Public Radio's "Live from Prairie Lights" series. Hour-long "Live from Prairie Lights" productions, hosted by WSUI's Julie Englander, air at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 7 p.m. Sundays on WSUI-AM 910 in Iowa City and WOI-AM 640 in Ames.

In the boldly divisive "Wrecking Crew," Frank examines the cost when Americans elect a "ruling coalition dedicated to dismantling the government." A Kirkus review described the book as "a no-holds-barred exegesis on the naked cynicism of conservatism in America."

An article in the New York Times Book Review observed, "In Thomas Frank, the American left has found its own Juvenal." And a review in Time summarized, "Frank offers one damning anecdote after another. 'The Wrecking Crew' explains how cynical conservatives have wrested control of the government by railing against its very existence, all while using federal perches to funnel billions into the pockets of lobbyists and the corporations they represent."

The founding editor of The Baffler and a contributing editor at Harper's, Frank has received a Lannan award and been a guest columnist for the New York Times.
