2008-09 UI Performing Arts auditions are scheduled
Auditions will be held for many of the 2008-09 ensembles and productions in the University of Iowa Division of Performing Arts at the beginning of the fall semester. Most productions and ensembles are open to all UI students, and some are open to members of the general public as well.
Auditions for the 2008 Dance Gala, which will take place in the Space Place Theater of North Hall this season due to flood damage in Hancher Auditorium, will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, in the Gym Studio, Room E203, of Halsey Hall. The roster of the 2008-09 Dancers in Company touring ensemble will be filled during the same auditions.
Auditions for all the UI concert bands in the School of Music will be held the week of Aug. 25 in the Newman Center at the corner of Jefferson and Clinton streets, with trombone, euphonium, tuba and horn auditions on Monday; oboe, bassoon and saxophone auditions on Tuesday; flute and clarinet auditions on Wednesday; and trumpet auditions on Thursday. Audition times may be scheduled in Room 107 of the Lindquist Center, or by calling 319-335-1635.
Auditioners should prepare two selections -- one technical and one lyrical -- of approximately one-and-one-half to two minutes in length. Sight reading will also be required.
Choral auditions for the School of Music will be held Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 25-27. The audition form is available online, from the School of Music home page, http://www.uiowa.edu/~music/index.html. Sign-up sheets are in the new choral room, Room 150, of Clinton Street Music 376. One of the buildings to be used by the School of Music while the Voxman Music Building is unavailable due to summer flooding, Clinton Street Music 376 is located on the corner of Clinton and Court streets in Iowa City, across from the main post office.
Auditions for string players in university orchestras will be held Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 25 and 26, in the Fellowship Hall of the Congregational United Church of Christ at the corner of Jefferson and Clinton streets, and in Room 104 of Clinton Street Music 376. A sign-up sheet for audition times can be found in 107 Lindquist Center, open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or students may e-mail the orchestra office (email@example.com) to arrange an audition time.
Auditions for all the fall-semester productions of the Department of Theatre Arts will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29, on the second floor of Brewery Square, 111 N. Linn St. Callbacks will be held Saturday through Wednesday, Aug. 30 through Sept. 3.
Visit http://wiki.uiowa.edu/display/theatre/Home for additional details and to sign up for a timeslot. Actors from the community may call David McGraw, 319-335-3906, to schedule an audition slot. Sign-ups will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, August 22.
Auditioners should prepare one or two monologues, not to exceed a total of three minutes. Auditioners may also sing a song unaccompanied or with a CD, but no show requires a musical audition in the first round. Bring a headshot or recent photo, or instant photos may be purchased at the auditions for $1.50.
Descriptions of the individual plays will be posted on the Web site. Perusal scripts are available in the Theatre Department main office at Brewery Square.
University Theatres auditions are open to anyone, and no connection to the Department of Theatre Arts or the UI is required. Nontraditional casting is the norm for all directors in all productions, except those in which race, gender, handicap or age is the explicit issue. Casting is nontraditional when all roles in a script are open to casting without bias in terms of race, gender, disability or age, so long as the actor can fulfill the artistic requirements of the role.
The School of Music and departments of Theatre and Dance comprise the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For more information, see their Web sites at http://www.uiowa.edu/~music/, http://www.uiowa.edu/~theatre/ and http://www.uiowa.edu/~dance/.
