Belin-Blank Center awards students for celebrating Creative Expressions

More than 400 Iowa students in kindergarten through college expressed their creativity and talents through artwork, poems, creative essays and performance pieces in Celebrating Creative Expression, a competition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the University of Iowa College of Education's Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development.

The students submitted their creative pieces and were judge by a panel of professionals in three categories: visual art work; creative writing; and performance art. Erika Matsuyama of Ankeny, Iowa, won the visual art award for "Ambassador of the Orange Planet." Katy Zalanik of Spencer, Iowa, won the creative writing award with "A Letter from Me," and Ria Olson of Marion, Iowa, won the performance art award for piano/vocal presentation of "The World."

The top merit winner in each of the three categories received a cash award of $500. Additional $50 awards of honorable mention were given to selected artists in each category and age group. Selected works will be included in publications displayed at the Belin-Blank Center.

Additional content for each area is posted on the Belin-Blank Center's Web site at http://www.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/events/20th_Anniversary/creative_expressions_winners.pdf.
