Stringer's memoir brings her back to UI for 'Live from Prairie Lights'

Former University of Iowa women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer will answer questions about her best-selling memoir, "Standing Tall," at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City. Listen live via the University of Iowa Writing University Web site at http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

The event will also be recorded for broadcast on the "Live from Prairie Lights" series, originating on UI radio station WSUI-AM 910. Hour-long Iowa Public Radio "Live from Prairie Lights" productions, hosted by Julie Englander, air at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays, and 7 p.m. Sundays on WSUI-AM 910 in Iowa City and WOI-AM 640 in Ames.

Stringer coached the 1992-93 Hawkeye team to the NCAA Final Four and has continued her success at Rutgers University. She was the first coach -- male or female -- to take three different programs to the Final Four. She is one of only three women's coaches who have won at least 800 games. A member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, she has been named National Coach of the Year three times by her peers.

A review in Booklist stated, "This is an emotional roller coaster of a memoir, but it is told with humor, passion, and gratitude. An inspiring life story -- and certain to get plenty of attention," and a review in Ebony magazine called the book "A moving memoir about overcoming adversity with grace and stamina."

Stringer has agreed to sign one memorabilia item for each copy of the book purchased by someone.
