UI School of Music honors student scholars and artists May 1

The University of Iowa School of Music will present its annual Honors Convocation, showcasing winners of the school's chamber music competition, at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus.

During the concert the School of Music will also honor the 81 students who received named music scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year, along with graduating students from the same period. The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Mark Weiger, associate director of the School of Music and the coordinator of the Honors Concert, said, "This event is an arena in which the School of Music can acknowledge our best students in performance and academics, identify and recognize the accomplishments, awards, grants, recordings and publications of our faculty, and give tribute to professors Myron Welch and Delbert Disselhorst who plan to retire."

"The Honors Convocation will feature an awards ceremony within a marvelous concert presentation by the winners of the chamber music competition. The program will include a string quartet, piano quintet, wind quintet and vocal ensemble. All of the performers on the program are scholarship recipients.

"It's a great pleasure for us to provide a showcase for these outstanding students. It's an opportunity to recognize the great contributions they make to the school, to share their talents with the public and at the same time to provide them with another step toward their development as professional musicians."

The winning chamber groups are all active ensembles, coached by faculty and selected by audition.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Visit the UI School of Music Web site at www.uiowa.edu/~music/.
