Recruitment, fundraising efforts underway for 2009 Dance Marathon

Dancer registration and community fundraisers are already underway for next year's University of Iowa Dance Marathon, to be held Jan. 30-31, 2009.

UI Dance Marathon, one of the largest student-run organizations on campus, has selected a new leadership team in preparation for its 15th year. This year's leadership group consists of more than 250 students. The group's main goal is to recruit and retain 1,600 dancers for the 2009 event. More than 1,000 dancers participated in the 2008 Dance Marathon, which raised $1,003,646.

Dance Marathon leadership teams will be on campus this spring, providing information in an effort to kick off spring recruitment activities. Dancer registration is available online at http://www.dancemarathon.org. The cost is $25, which covers dancer expenses at the event. Those who register will be eligible to win an iPod following the "Battle of the Bands" competition April 12 on the River Terrace of the Iowa Memorial Union. Hosted by Campus Activities Board, the music starts at 2:30 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. by a Dance Marathon barbeque and the iPod drawing.

Two local businesses also have activities planned in April to benefit Dance Marathon. Chick-Fil-A at the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville will donate 10 percent of its profits between 5 to 8 p.m. April 7 and 8.

Cold Stone Creamery in downtown Iowa City will donate 25 percent of its profits and all tips received between 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 21.

UI Dance Marathon works to create special projects to provide emotional and financial support to families treated at UI Children's Hospital, with an emphasis on pediatric cancer. Over the past 14 years, the event has raised more than $6.5 million to help children and their families.
