Lopes, Warner, Loebsack to discuss new financial aid legislation Sept. 21

University of Iowa Interim Provost Lola Lopes and Mark Warner, UI director of student financial aid and assistant provost for enrollment services, will make remarks during a 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, news conference called by Rep. David Loebsack to discuss the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. The event will take place in the Hubbard Commons of the UI's Iowa Memorial Union.

Lopes, Warner, Loebsack and several UI students will discuss the importance of the act (H.R. 2669), which Loebsack supported and President George Bush recently signed into law, and its impact on student financial aid.

According to a news release from Loebsack's office, the legislation represents the single largest investment in college financial aid since the 1944 GI Bill, helping millions of students and families pay for college -- and doing so at no new cost to U.S. taxpayers. It will boost college financial aid by more than $20 billion over the next five years and pays for itself by reducing excessive federal subsidies paid to lenders in the college loan industry by $20.9 billion. It also includes $750 million in federal budget deficit reduction.
