Flu clinics offer UI students vaccines, volunteer opportunities
University of Iowa students can help contribute to a healthier campus by taking advantage of several seasonal flu clinics offered Tuesday, Oct. 30, through Friday, Nov. 2, in the Chalktalk Lounge on the ground floor of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). Sponsored by Student Health Service, the walk-in clinics will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
Both the injectable flu vaccine ($15) and FluMist (a nasal spray, $20) will be offered. Special appearances by Herky are planned throughout the clinics.
At the event, students will have the opportunity to receive their flu shot or FluMist for free by completing the requirements for a new volunteer program called the UI Public Health Emergency Student Volunteer Advanced Registration (UI-PHESVAR). The UI-PHESVAR is a secure and confidential database of potential student volunteers who may be contacted during a public health emergency, such as an influenza pandemic.
Volunteers with medical credentials may be asked to help with tasks in the UI community such as administering vaccinations. Most volunteers will have nonmedical jobs such as staffing a hotline, delivering food or supplies, or delivering communication messages across campus during a power outage. UI-PHESVAR registrants are not required to complete volunteer duties during a public health emergency and may decline to volunteer for any reason. The UI-PHESVAR is sponsored by the UI, Student Health Services, and the Upper Midwest Center for Public Health Preparedness.
To qualify for a free flu vaccination, students must submit a UI-PHESVAR form and complete a 90-minute online training program within a specified time period.
Students who are unable to attend the IMU vaccination clinics may obtain a flu vaccine at Student Health Service, 4189 Westlawn South, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, throughout the flu season. Flu shots ($15) and FluMist ($20) are currently available.
