UI program teaches Wilton sophomores about Islam Oct. 26

Sophomores at Wilton Community School in Wilton, Iowa, will get to expand their knowledge of Islam when University of Iowa scholar Heba Arafa visits their classroom Friday, Oct. 26.

Her visit is part of the UI International Programs' International Classroom Journey (ICJ), a program which seeks to internationalize the K-12 curriculum in eastern Iowa. The presentation will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon for teacher Shannon McDonald's 10th-grade world history class. Arafa's talk ties in with the class' unit on the origins of Islam.

Arafa is a Fulbright Scholar from Egypt participating in the UI master's program in second-language acquisition and a graduate assistant who teaches Arabic classes.

The ICJ, which is sponsored by UI International Programs, arranges for guest speakers to visit K-12 classrooms and community groups to promote cultural awareness and knowledge of other countries. These guest speakers are trained international students and scholars and U.S. students who have spent time abroad.
