UI College of Pharmacy to honor faculty, preceptors Oct. 26

Four faculty members and six preceptors in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy will be honored for outstanding teaching during the 2006-07 academic year at a reception Oct. 26 at the college.

Gary Milavetz, associate professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy, is the college's recipient of this year's UI College Teaching Award. Jonathan Doorn, assistant professor of medicinal and natural products chemistry, was named Teacher of the Year by the college's class of 2010. Robert Shaw, clinical assistant professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy, was chosen as Teacher of the Year by the class of 2009. Jenna Steffensmeier, clinical assistant professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy, was selected as Teacher of the Year by the class of 2008.

The Teacher of the Year awards are based on nominations by students and are selected by a faculty committee comprised of the previous year's award recipients.

CoraLynn Trewet, a clinical assistant professor at Broadlawns Family Health Center in Des Moines, is the recipient of the Faculty Preceptor of the Year award. Community Practice Preceptor of the Year awards will be presented to Kristin Berger and Bethany Sather at Target Pharmacy in West Des Moines. John Rode, Jennifer Rode and Michelle Birdsell at Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa will receive Hospital/Health System Preceptor of the Year awards.

The college's Professional Experiential Program and the Office of Academic Affairs selects the preceptor award winners, based on composite student evaluations of the preceptors and the teaching sites.

Preceptors serve as mentors to the fourth-year pharmacy students during the students' clinical clerkships. The clerkships emphasize clinical pharmacy skill development and give students the opportunity to work closely with pharmacists in professional care settings.
