UI statistics lectures scheduled Oct. 11-12

The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science will sponsor two free, public Allen T. Craig Lectures Thursday, Oct. 11, and Friday, Oct. 12, by Nancy Reid, professor of statistics at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Reid's first lecture, "Weighting the Likelihood Function," will be given at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in Room 140 of Schaeffer Hall.

The second lecture, aimed at a general audience and titled "Putting Asymptotics to Work," will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 in Room 140 of Schaeffer Hall.

Reid is a leading statistical scientist whose current interests include statistical methods in biology and environmental science. She was the first woman and first resident Canadian to receive the Presidents' Award of the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies. She has served as president of the Statistical Society of Canada, president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and vice president of the International Statistical Institute. She is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, the Royal Society of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
