Community seminar Nov. 26 to focus on diabetes

Experts from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will present a free community seminar on diabetes from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, 1220 First Ave. in Coralville.

William Sivitz, M.D., professor of internal medicine; Vicki Kraus, Ph.D., advanced registered nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator; and Debbie Lidd, dietician and certified diabetes educator, will present "Diabetes: What Can I Do?"

The group will discuss diabetes and the latest information in preventing and managing the disease. Discussion will include:

-- What is diabetes and why is it so bad?

-- What are Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?

-- Why is nutrition so important?

-- What is new in diabetes management?

-- Can diabetes be prevented?

There are 20.8 million Americans with diabetes, and nearly one-third of these individuals -- or 6.2 million people -- do not know it. Approximately 7 percent of Iowans have diabetes.

The scope of the problem is even bigger once the 54 million Americans at risk of diabetes because of elevated blood-sugar levels are included. This means at least one quarter of the American population either has, or is at risk for developing. diabetes.

Diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce or properly use insulin, the hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy. Although the cause is a mystery, genetics and environmental factors, as well as obesity, diet, lack of exercise, and aging all appear to play a role in the development type 2 diabetes.

Advance registration for this free community seminar is encouraged. To register, call UI Health Access at 319-384-8442 or toll free 800-777-8442.

This seminar is part of the "Health For Your Lifetime" series presented as a public service by UI Hospitals and Clinics.
