UI Students Elected To Phi Beta Kappa Membership

Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduates in the liberal arts and sciences, has inducted 100 University of Iowa students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Ninety-five students were elected using the "senior standard," which requires students to complete 100 semester hours of college coursework with at least 60 hours at the UI, maintain a 3.80 UI and cumulative grade point average, and satisfy the foreign language requirement.

The other five students were elected using the "junior standard," which requires students to complete a minimum 80 semester hours of UI coursework, maintain a 3.90 UI and cumulative grade point average, and satisfy the foreign language requirement.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. More than 15,000 new members are elected each year from 262 chapters across the United States.

Iowa

ADEL: Elizabeth Holoubek, of Adel, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication and minors in American studies and English, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Holoubek is a 2003 graduate of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School and the daughter of Rollie and DyAnne Holoubek.

AMANA: Alicia Persaud, of Amana, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in anthropology and women's studies, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Persaud is a 2003 graduate of Cedar Rapids Prairie High School and the daughter of Kuldeep and Debbie Persaud.

AMES: Leslie Koppenhaver, of Ames, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in theatre arts and English, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Koppenhaver is a 2003 graduate of Ames High School and the daughter of Gary and Kay Koppenhaver.

Christina McClelland, of Ames, a junior majoring in studio art in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McClelland is a 2004 graduate of Ames High School and the daughter of John McClelland and Linda Seaverson.

Catherine Wilson, of Ames, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in classical languages and a minor in English, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Wilson is a 2002 graduate of Ames High School and the daughter of Barbara and Martin Wilson.

ANKENY: Drew Cumings, of Ankeny, a junior studying Spanish and English in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Cumings, a 2004 graduate of Ankeny High School, is the son of Michael and Roxanne Cumings and brother of Ryan Cumings.

BETTENDORF: Rebecca McKanna, of Bettendorf, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and psychology, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McKanna is a 2003 graduate of Bettendorf High School and the daughter of Robert and Carolyn McKanna.

CARROLL: Brett Roberts, of Carroll, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and political science, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Roberts is a 2003 graduate of Carroll High School and the son of Rod and Trish Roberts.

CEDAR FALLS: Benjamin Wilson, of Cedar Falls, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with bachelor's degrees in cinema and French and a minor in computer science, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Wilson is a 2003 graduate of Northern University High School and the son of Barry and Jane Wilson.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Matthew Janechek, of Cedar Rapids, a senior studying for degrees in art education and ceramics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Janechek is a 2003 graduate of Linn-Mar High School and the son of Charles and Debra Janechek, of Springville.

Sarah Seyfer, of Cedar Rapids, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in integrative physiology, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Seyfer is a 2003 graduate of Washington High School and the daughter of Pete and Joy Seyfer.

CHEROKEE: Melissa Rupp, of Cherokee, Iowa, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Spanish, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Rupp is a 2003 graduate of Washington High School and the daughter of Roger and Opal Rupp.

CORWITH: Maggie Anderson, of Corwith, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication and art history, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Anderson is a 2003 graduate of Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School and the daughter of Merlin and Vanna Anderson.

DAVENPORT: Erika Binegar, of Davenport, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication and international studies, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Binegar is a 2003 graduate of Central High School and the daughter of David and Lynn Binegar. 

DES MOINES: Lauren Adams, of Des Moines, a senior studying graphic design and Spanish in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Adams is a 2004 graduate of Lincoln High School and the daughter of Sherwood and Barbara Adams, of 3605 Thornton Ave.

Eishita Manjrekar, of Des Moines, a senior majoring in psychology, international studies, and Chinese in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in he liberal arts and sciences. Manjrekar is a 2004 graduate of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Penn., and the niece of Lata D'mello, of 709 17th St.

DUBUQUE: Allison Brimeyer, of Dubuque, a senior majoring in Spanish, Latin American studies and anthropology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Brimeyer is a 2003 graduate of Hempstead High School and the daughter of Thomas Brimeyer and Pamela Willey.

Amy Domeyer, of Dubuque, a junior studying English and pre-medicine in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Domeyer is a 2004 graduate of Wahlert High School and the daughter of Steve and Janet Domeyer.

HARLAN: Molly Heim, of Harlan, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in psychology and women's studies, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Heim is a 2003 graduate of Harlan High School and the daughter of Keith and Deb Heim.

IOWA CITY: Abbey Furlong, of Iowa City, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English, Spanish and international studies, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Furlong is a 2002 graduate of City High School and the daughter of Tom and Devona Furlong.

Alina Haidri, of Iowa City, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in anthropology, international studies and a minor in Spanish, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Haidri is a 2002 graduate of City High School and the daughter of Shama and Naseer Haidri.

Buu Anh To, of Iowa City, a senior studying Chinese and pre-medicine in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. To is a 2003 graduate of City High School and the daughter of Dai To and Tien Ly.

Sean Williams, of Iowa City, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in political science and religious studies and minors in philosophy and German, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Williams is a 2003 graduate of City High School and the son of Melissa and Kent Williams.

FAIRFIELD: Sam Rozen, of Fairfield, a junior studying science education in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Rozen is a 2004 graduate of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment and the son of Janis Maroney, of Ormond Beach, Florida.

GRINNELL: John Heineman, of Grinnell, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with bachelor's degrees in biology and political science, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Heineman is a 2003 graduate of Grinnell High School and the son of Brian and Nancy Heineman.

MASON CITY: Shawn Weber, of Mason City, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in psychology, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Weber is a 2003 graduate of Newman High School and the son of Tim Weber and Ellen Weber.

NEWTON: Anastasia Bassis, of Newton, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in microbiology and Spanish, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Bassis is a 2004 graduate of Newton High School and the daughter of Vladimir and Irina Bassis, of Ames.

NEVADA: Tom Niblock, of Nevada, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Henry B. Tippie College of Business with a bachelor's degree in religious studies and economics, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Niblock, a 2003 graduate of Nevada High School, is the son of James and Karen Niblock and the grandson of LaNair and Dororthy Niblock.

ORANGE CITY: Will Schouten, of Orange City, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in integrative physiology, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Schouten is a 2003 graduate of MOC/Floyd Valley High School and the son of Mark Schouten, of Norwalk, Iowa, and Kimberly Utke Svanoe, of Sioux Falls, S.D.

OSAGE: Vanessa Boehmer, of Osage, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a minor in Spanish, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Boehmer is a 2003 graduate of Osage High School and the daughter of Laurie Boehmer and the late Merle Boehmer.

OSKALOOSA: Neo Buenger McAdams, of Oskaloosa, a senior studying geoscience in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McAdams is a 2004 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and the daughter of Pat McAdams, of Rose Hill, and Glenda Buenger, of Oskaloosa.

RED OAK: Heidi Fehring, of Red Oak, a senior studying elementary education in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Fehring is a 2003 graduate of Red Oak High School and the daughter of Pat and Marcia Fehring.

ROCKWELL CITY: Alison Moeller, of Rockwell City, Iowa, a senior studying journalism and mass communication and health promotion in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Moeller is a 2003 graduate of Rockwell City-Lytton High School and the daughter of Ray and Sue Moeller.

SOLON: Cheryl J. Poduska, of Solon, a junior studying elementary education and music performance in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Poduska is a 2004 graduate of Solon High School and the daughter of Beverly Poduska and the late Daniel Poduska.

Stephen Schmidt, of Solon, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication and English, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Schmidt is a 2001 graduate of Solon High School and the son of Kris Brown and Jim Schmidt.

ST. LUCAS: Jacquelyn Manderfield, of St. Lucas, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Manderfield, a 2003 graduate of Turkey Valley High School, is the daughter of Loren and Marilyn Manderfield and granddaughter of DeVere and Virginia Manderfield and Catherine Foreman, all of St. Lucas.

SPIRIT LAKE: Ben Lester, of Spirit Lake, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in psychology, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Lester is a 2003 graduate of Spirit Lake High School and the son of David and Cindy Lester.

URBANDALE: Allyson Hermann, of Urbandale, a December 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in English secondary education and philosophy, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Hermann is a 2002 graduate of Urbandale High School and the daughter of Lisa Stock, of 3425 68th St., and Brad Hermann, of Madison, Wis.

Rittierodt is a 2003 graduate of Johnston High School and the daughter of Lisa and David Rittierodt.

WATERLOO: David Jennings, of Waterloo, a senior studying athletic training in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Jennings is a 2003 graduate of West High School and the son of Todd and Jan Jennings.

WAUKEE: Jessica McKinney, of Waukee, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in political science and minors in communication studies and entrepreneurship, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McKinney is a 2003 graduate of Dowling High School and the daughter of Debra and Wayne H. McKinney Jr., of 32115 Booneville Road.

Illinois

FREEPORT: Benjamin Lischwe, of Freeport, Ill., a senior studying mathematics education with a minor in Spanish in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Lischwe is a 2004 graduate of Freeport High School and the son of Bernard and Deborah Lischwe.

GALENA: Laura Hirschey, of Galena, Ill., a senior studying music education and bassoon performance in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Hirschey is a 2003 graduate of Shawnee High School in Medford, New Jersey, and the daughter of Mary and Kevin Hirschey.

PORT BYRON: Kristen Breaux, of Port Byron, Ill., a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in biology and psychology, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Breaux is a 2003 graduate of Riverdale High School and the daughter of Steven and JoAnn Breaux.

Minnesota

ROCHESTER: Erin O'Brien, of Rochester, Minn., a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in international studies and geography, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. O'Brien is a 2003 graduate of Lourdes High School and the daughter of Mike and Nancy O'Brien.

Missouri

ST. JOSEPH: Lisa Raffensperger, of St. Joseph, Mo., a senior studying English and biology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Raffensperger is a 2003 graduate of Central High School and the daughter of Maureen and Terry Raffensperger.

North Carolina

CARY: Zack Gauck, of Cary, a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in Chinese and an international business certificate, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Gauck is a 2003 graduate of Cary Academy and the son of Marge Petesch and David Gauck of Cary, and he thanks their corresponding families for their support.

Wisconsin

PEWAUKEE: Jennifer Bissell, of Pewaukee, Wis., a May 2007 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications and health and sport studies, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Bissell is a 2003 graduate of Pewaukee High School and the daughter of Tom and Kathie Bissell.
