UI Pharmacist To Lead State Pharmacy Board

Paul Abramowitz, Pharm.D., director of the Department of Pharmaceutical Care at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and assistant dean and professor in the UI College of Pharmacy, is the new chairperson of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

Abramowitz's term began May 1. The Board of Pharmacy is responsible for regulating the practice of pharmacy and the legal distribution of prescription drugs throughout the state.

Abramowitz has served on the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners for the past seven years. He is also vice chair of the board of directors of the Iowa Statewide Poison Control Center, a joint venture of UI Hospitals and Clinics and the Iowa Health System. He is a past president of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Donna Katen-Bahensky, senior associate vice president for medical affairs and chief executive officer of UI Hospitals and Clinics, said, "Paul's exceptional knowledge base, coupled with his unquestionable integrity, high standards and leadership capabilities, make him an excellent choice for serving the State of Iowa as the chair of the Board of Pharmacy."
