Daily Iowan Television Wins State Broadcast News Awards

The University of Iowa student-run Daily Iowan Television (DITV) is less than two years old, but it fared well at this year's Iowa Broadcast News Association awards.

In competition with colleges and universities from across the state of Iowa, DITV took home 12 awards for the 2006 calendar year, including best newscast, best sportscast and second place for political coverage.

For individual awards, Becky Bereiter placed first in the spot news category. Second-place award recipients were: Whitney Givens, in-depth series; Jay Knoll, news photography; Knoll, feature; and Shelby Cloke, general reporting. Third-place award recipients were: Katie Martin, feature; Cloke, spot news; Sara Overbeeke, general reporting; and Randy Satovitz, political coverage. Givens received an honorable mention in the in-depth series category.

"This is a wonderful achievement for these students," said UI Adjunct Professor Charles Munro, who teaches broadcast journalism courses in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "It's amazing how, in less than two years, DITV has evolved from televising a few class projects to producing a television news broadcast five days a week. Now, a panel of professionals has recognized our student journalists as some of the best in the state. We're very proud of the work they are producing."

The awards were presented May 5 at the Best Western Hotel in Clear Lake. Munro, DITV Executive Producer Givens and DITV reporters Martin and Satovitz attended.

DITV is the television service provided by The Daily Iowan. Established in October 2005, it is jointly supported by The Daily Iowan and the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication. DITV produces a 15-minute newscast during the academic year at 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday on UITV, Mediacom channel 17. View DITV Webcasts around the clock at: http://www.dailyiowan.com/DITV.
