Damiano Honored By Iowa Dental Association

A University of Iowa College of Dentistry faculty member is the 2007 recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Iowa Dental Association (IDA).

Peter C. Damiano, D.D.S., professor of preventive and community dentistry, and director of the Health Policy Research Program in the UI Public Policy Center, received the award at the 2007 IDA Annual Session, held May 5-7 in Coralville.

The award is presented annually to an individual who has shown exceptional leadership and service to the profession of dentistry.

As a UI College of Dentistry faculty member, Damiano teaches pre-doctoral students in the areas of public health, legislative and policy issues, health insurance, health care delivery systems, and quality of care. For postdoctoral students, he teaches research methods, and mentors master's degree candidates and doctoral-level students on their research projects. Damiano also sees patients in the college's Special Care Clinic.

As a health services researcher, Damiano's studies focus on access, quality and costs of health care. He incorporates dental care into his research as one aspect of primary care. Damiano is currently the lead researcher for a number of studies that evaluate oral health-related issues, including a study of the health and well-being of children in Iowa; an evaluation of the Medicaid managed care programs from the consumer perspective; and a series of studies about the outcomes of care for children and adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate in Iowa, Arkansas and New York.

Damiano has served on a number of state committees, including being a former chair of the oral health committee for the "Healthy Iowans 2010" process, and he was chair of the Iowa State Dental Advisory Council. Damiano also has been coordinating an effort to improve access to nursing home care through the Iowa Dental Nursing Home project with the assistance of the Iowa Dental Association.
