UI Unveils New Center For Diversity And Enrichment

The University of Iowa has launched a new Center for Diversity and Enrichment (CDE) to bring under one umbrella a variety of programs, offices and services that work to create a welcoming climate for students, staff and faculty from communities underrepresented in higher education.

A merger of Support Service Programs and Opportunity at Iowa, the CDE provides leadership and coordination for outreach and service to underserved students from diverse backgrounds, including students of color, first-generation students whose parents have not received a baccalaureate degree and students from low-income families.

CDE offers programming and networking activities such as community building, tutoring, individualized guidance, summer programs, academic skill development and connections to UI and community resources. It also partners with other UI departments, communities and schools for pre-college student development and recruitment.

The UI, through the CDE, will also continue to administer two federally funded educational outreach programs on campus, Upward Bound and New Dimensions in Learning.

Marcella David, associate provost and special assistant to the UI president of equal opportunity and diversity, said the merger is the culmination of discussions with leaders across campus, including Provost Mike Hogan, Vice President for Student Services Phillip Jones and former UI President David Skorton. She said the CDE will directly support the UI's Strategic Plan, "The Iowa Promise," which recognizes diversity as essential to educational excellence.

The CDE staff and operations that were formerly Opportunity at Iowa and Support Service Programs Academic Planning are located in 24 Phillips Hall and may be reached at 319-335-3555. New Dimensions in Learning is located in 310 Calvin Hall and may be contacted at 319-335-1288. And Upward Bound's offices are in 315 Calvin Hall and may be reached at 319-335-6708.
