OnIowa.com Unveils Alumni Directory, Prize Drawing

OnIowa.com, the University of Iowa's official online community for alumni, will formally launch on Monday, April 2.

To celebrate the launch of the site, which aims to give alumni a unique way to connect with each other and the university, the UI Alumni Association (UIAA) is giving away prizes ranging from Hawk Shop gift certificates to an iPod Nano. The grand prize winner will receive two seats in the Kinnick Stadium press box for this November's Hawkeye football game against Western Michigan. All alumni who register at http://www.oniowa.com by April 30 will be automatically entered into the drawing.

A partnership between the UIAA, the Provost's Office, all 11 colleges, and International Programs, OnIowa.com is free, easy to use, and open to all UI alumni. Since March, alumni have been able to use the site to reconnect with friends and classmates, network with Iowa graduates, share news, search for alumni events in their area, and much more. As of April 2, a secure, password-protected alumni directory will become available.

Users may search the alumni directory by name, degree, year, major, college, and affinity with student organizations and activities, the residence halls, and Iowa Clubs. Community members choose whether to display their personal and professional contact information.

To register, alumni can visit http://www.oniowa.com. Once logged in, users can create a "My Hawk Page" profile and convey news about their families, careers, and interests via "Hawkeye Notes." Plus, participants can receive automatic notification whenever their friends add news.

The virtual community also offers a free, personalized UI alumni e-mail address service that forwards messages to any other e-mail account. Alumni can use it as their default address, so they won't need to notify contacts each time they change jobs or Internet service providers. They can also receive messages from friends and classmates through the community, while keeping their e-mail addresses private.

To protect personal information, security is a key feature of the new community. Exclusive parts of the site are only accessible to registered alumni, and users decide how much personal information to make public. Community members can choose to hide portions or all of their information. They may also call the alumni association at 800-469-2586 to have their listing removed from the directory.
