CLAS Awards Marcus Bach Fellowships for 2007-08

The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) has announced the winners of the Marcus Bach Fellowships for Graduate Students in the Humanities for 2007-08: Nicole Buscemi and Anita T. Gaul.

Buscemi, a student in the Department of English, received a Bach Fellowship to complete her doctoral dissertation, "Diagnosing Narratives: Illness, the Case History, and Victorian Fiction." Gaul, a student in the Department of History, will use her Bach Fellowship to complete her dissertation, "Bishop John Ireland's Catholic Colonization Project and the Formation of Rural Ethnic Parishes on the Minnesota Frontier, 1876-1905."

The announcement comes during Graduate Student Recognition Week, which runs March 26-31 to recognize the unique and vital role graduate students play on campus.

Bach Fellowships are awarded by the CLAS to support completion of master of fine arts projects or doctoral dissertations. Graduate students in the humanities and related fields are invited to apply.

The first three Bach fellowships were awarded in 2005-06; four more were awarded in 2006-07. Each award provided a one-semester fellowship of $7,500 and a $500 tuition scholarship. This time, the CLAS made two yearlong awards.

Bach Fellowships are made possible by a bequest from the estate of Marcus Bach. In 1942, Bach earned a doctorate through the UI's Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts, now the Department of Communication Studies and the Department of Theatre Arts. The fellowship's focus is to support research and creative work that explores and celebrates intercultural communication and the understanding of diverse philosophies and religious perspectives. Recipients must demonstrate awareness of Bach's ideas and research, and link their own work to those ideas.

Applications for 2008-09 Bach Fellowships will be accepted between Oct. 1 and Dec. 7, 2007. For more information, visit http://www.clas.uiowa.edu/students/Bach_Fellowship.shtml.
