Writers' Workshop Alumnus Rohrer Reads His Poetry March 29

University of Iowa Writers' Workshop alumnus Matthew Rohrer will be joined by Jaswinder Bolina and Matthew Zapruder in a poetry reading at 7 p.m. Thursday March 29 in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen live on the Internet at http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu.

Bolina's "Carrier Wave" was recently published as the winner of the Colorado Poetry Prize; Zapruder's "The Pajamaist" came out last fall; and Rohrer's new volume is "Rise Up."

A preview of "Rise Up" in Publishers Weekly found the book's 17 poems "startlingly accurate representations of their times."

Rohrer's previous books are "A Green Light," "Satellite" and "A Hummock in the Malookas, which was selected by Mary Oliver for the 1994 National Poetry Series. With Joshua Beckman, he is co-author of "Nice Hat. Thanks" and the audio CD "Adventures While Preaching the Gospel of Beauty."

The "Writing University" Web site at http://writinguniversity.uiowa.edu not only provides a handy portal to the UI writing programs -- including the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the International Writing Program, the Nonfiction Writing Program, the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, the Translation Workshop and the Iowa Summer Writing Festival -- but also centralizes writing news, lists upcoming events and provides access to a wealth of writing materials: texts, journals, lists of Iowa-connected writers and publications, historic videos and archived audio. Visitors to the site have the option of subscribing to an RSS feed.
