Mayflies To Perform On 'Java Blend' Program March 23

The Mayflies will perform live at noon Friday, March 23, at the Java House, located at 211 E. Washington St. in downtown Iowa City.

The public is invited to be part of the live audience for the free show, which will be recorded for broadcast on Iowa Public Radio's "Java Blend" program originating from University of Iowa radio station WSUI-AM 910.

Selected early in their career as a showcase act for the South By Southwest festival in 2001, the Mayflies play rock music rooted firmly in bluegrass, psychedelic rock and blues. The Iowa City-based band's latest CD is called "Jerusalem Ridge," and is primarily bluegrass.

Hosted by Ben Kieffer, "Java Blend" offers an eclectic mix of live music from the vibrant independent music scene, featuring artists from around the state and around the country. Kieffer infuses the performances with lively discussion to find out about the artists' music and lives.

The hour will be broadcast at a later date on Iowa Public Radio stations across the state: KUNI Cedar Falls/Waterloo/Cedar Rapids/Iowa City; KUNY/KRNI Mason City; KDMR Des Moines; KDUB Dubuque; WSUI Iowa City/Cedar Rapids; WOI Ames/Des Moines; KTPR Fort Dodge; KOWI Lamoni; and KWOI Carroll. For broadcast times, see http://iowapublicradio.org/programs.php and scroll to "Java Blend."

The program will also be videotaped for several TV broadcasts on the UITV cable channel in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area. The audio version also can be heard worldwide on the Internet via the respective stations' live webcasting.
