Students Attend Momix Stage Door Event In Hancher
More than 1,400 Iowa and Illinois school children attended a matinee Stage Door event with the Momix dance company on Feb. 28 in the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium.
The event occurred in conjunction with the Momix public performance of "Lunar Sea," which uses black lights to create gravity-defying illusions.
For the school groups the company performed the second half of the show, "Bay of Seething," which features haunting, angel-like puppets created by Michael Curry.
Critic Jack Anderson wrote: "Ordinary concepts of weight are constantly defied. Dancers bound about without touching the floor, or if they do, they instantly bounce heavenward again. Scurrying creatures appear to be nothing but legs. Body parts miraculously detach themselves and reassemble. Waving arms become bird wings. Shapes zip in and out as if on celestial skateboards."
Momix is directed by Moses Pendleton, who has been one of American's most popular and innovative choreographers and directors. A founding member of Pilobolus in 1971, Pendleton formed Momix in the 1980s to pursue his personal vision. The company quickly shot to worldwide fame for its inventive, witty and illusionistic style.
