June 25, 2007 UI Physician Appointed Director of Palliative Care
Broderick is a clinical associate professor in the UI Department of Internal Medicine and is board certified in hospice and palliative medicine. She also served for nine years as medical director of Iowa City Hospice, which serves patients and their families affected by chronic diseases in a five-county area in eastern Iowa. "It's clear that Dr. Broderick's history of working effectively with nurses, social workers and chaplains through her position at Iowa City Hospice makes her particularly qualified for this important post," Katen-Bahensky said. "The experience she brings from her work in the community will be invaluable in creating a hospital-based program that incorporates the best approaches to caring for patients and their families affected by chronic disease." "I want to applaud the hospice community for the invaluable experience I gained from my service in homes and long-term care facilities across eastern Iowa," Broderick added. "Their knowledge, experience and dedication truly inspired me and helped prepare me for this important position." The Palliative Care Program at UI Hospitals and Clinics provides care for patients and families who face life-threatening illnesses. The service offers pain and symptom management, support in dealing with emotional stress and social issues, and spiritual support. The team works with the patient's primary medical doctor. A physician may contact the Palliative Care Consultation Service for assistance with any patient. The program receives important financial support from the Holden Comprehensive Cancer at the UI. Broderick is an alumna of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. She completed residency training and a fellowship at UI Hospitals and Clinics. She will continue to serve as a faculty member in the UI Department of Internal Medicine.
