Currie Installed As Iowa Pharmacy Association President

Jay Currie, Pharm.D., clinical professor in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, was installed as 128th president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) at the group's annual banquet June 9 in Coralville.

Currie, who also serves as associate head of the UI College of Pharmacy's Division of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy, directs the college's professional experience program, with responsibility for introductory and advanced practice experiences, the community pharmaceutical care rotation, and the community care pharmacy practice residency program.

In the 1990s Currie was one of the founding members of the Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care, a collaborative effort of the UI College of Pharmacy, the Drake University College of Pharmacy in Des Moines, and the IPA. The center helped facilitate the transition of pharmacy practices in Iowa to a pharmaceutical care-based model, in which pharmacists take an active role in their patients' drug regimens and work closely with patients' physicians to identify potential problems with drug interaction and drug duplication.

Currie has received the IPA Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award for his work, and he has presented educational sessions and posters at IPA meetings on numerous occasions. He served as speaker of IPA House of Delegates in 2005 and as president-elect of the IPA in 2006-2007.

Currie received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1980 and a doctorate in 1984 at the UI. He began his professional career as a staff pharmacist and a long-term care consultant at Claxton Pharmacy in Cedar Rapids. He subsequently practiced as the clinical pharmacist at the Mechanicsville Pioneer Medical Center and the Family Practice Center in Cedar Rapids. He joined the UI faculty in 1984.
